100 Years

is the new album by Hugo Race and Michelangelo Russo, fusing blues, ambient and electronica, inspired and unclassifiable.

Hugo Race, (Ex- Bad Seeds, Dirtmusic, The Wreckery, The True Spirit, Fatalists) producer, performer and songwriter, together with multi-instrumentalist Michelangelo Russo released John Lee Hooker's World Today (Glitterhouse/Gusstaff Records) in 2017, a tribute to the blues legend’s delta legacy reinvented in a swirling mix of analog grit and deep trance pulses.

The new album, recorded in a two day live studio session, 100 Years, focuses the duo's sonic alchemy on Race’s evocative songwriting. Electric harmonica, echoing guitars, smoky vocals and primal beats in a hypnotic wall of sound, hand-made from ancient roots. “Tradition does not mean passing the ashes, but the fire.”

Rolling Stone, Germany: 'Dark Eros and transcendental blues...'

Musikreviews.de, Germany: "A psychedelic ghost blues of a profound sort, (Race and Russo) have blown us away in slow motion, economically instrumented and with painfully beautiful intensity. “

Eclipsed, Germany: "Hypnotic rhythms and haunting guitars, this album tingles under your skin..."

Focus Kultur, Germany: "No one else makes music like this, and that in itself is an achievement..."

Rock and Folk, Paris: 'This traveler without borders advances through a menacing atmosphere of no-wave electro-acoustics. Here is the spirit, and he does not forget the body and the soul ... '

Tom Tom Rock, Italy: “An almost epic attack, worthy of the soundtrack of an apocalyptic post-nuclear catastrophe film... a talking blues of the third millennium, filtered by years of psychedelia and industrial music.”

“A long time ago I heard an indescribable sound, a voice, music that touched a part of me I didn't yet know existed or understood! I was HOOKED! The music, I discovered came from the great John Lee Hooker! himself! Over three or four wines, with my great friend and collaborator Michelangelo Russo we hatched a plan. A dream idea where we'd immerse ourselves into the John Lee Hooker world to make a Hooker album for the 21st Century.”

“The fact is nothing we play or sing would exist in the form it does without the long long shadow of John Lee Hooker hovering over rock and roll since his birth in the Mississippi Delta,100 years ago. I've always felt that John Lee was talking directly to me through his music. I think we all had this impression sometimes. Don Rogall suggested we do something about it and drop some John Lee tracks at the Bassey Club in Berlin. The idea gathered momentum from there - John Lee Hooker's World Today was taped in a single day in Berlin with Boris Wilsdorf, then Michelangelo Russo and I went full immersion in the mix.... We wanted to make a blues album that doesn't sound like the blues, a Hooker album for the 21st Century of online sedition and endless repetition. We became so lost in this massive morphing sound that we called on guru Idge to save our souls from this transient electrical dark space shot through with sonic synapses, to bring it back down to earth and make this monster real. Well, here it is. Out today with a new video for the track Love Blues, directed by Donald Baldie and Matt Wilson and starring Joanne Evangelia Caligiuri styled by Alannah Hill. Many many thanks to everybody who helped realise this project, coming from the heart, hungry for your soul - like John Lee said - "there aint nuthin to it, its just a beat......."
